Beatnik’s on the move

After almost 6 years in the awesome building on 17th and Broadway, Beatnik Studios purchased a building and is moving to a beautiful neighborhood near south side park in Downtown Sacramento. Owning our own building is giving us the opportunity take our vision to the next level. It’s been tons of hard work but we’re moving fast and getting lots done! I can’t thank all of the people involved enough for all of your hard work and enthusiasm.  We can’t wait to see 723 S street transform into Sacramento’s most stunning venue, photo studio and art gallery!

Kelly, Wes, Lindsay, Jett, Elisabeth, Steve.. best demo crew ever!

Summer Road Trip

Every summer I have to go on a skateboarding road trip.. it’s good for the soul.  This year we hopped in this old bucket of a van and headed for Yellowstone.  The crew was Richard Hughes, Mark Dillon, Chuck Donnatin, Carl Forlano and me.  We left at 3am Sunday morning and watched the sunrise over the Nevada desert…

ghost

Cops kicked us out of this little ghost town somewhere deep in Nevada.  We had a couple run ins with John Law on the trip but got away free and clear.  Good thing nobody searched the bucket.. I think the smell was enough to discourage them.

fuzz

This spot is on the boarder of Nevada and Utah where all the bad Mormons come to drink, gamble and cut loose.  Nobody had the energy to tangle with this monster so we high tailed it across the salt flats.

Free camping in Idaho!  we found a really cool spot on the snake river, built a fire and set up a shooting gallery.

IMG_7785Found some good spots in Idaho, Richard sacked a rail and broke his tailbone… which he wouldn’t realize until after the trip.  Mark got a couple cool lines at this school.

Went to old faithful and did a couple pop shuvs for the crowds.  Again too many people, don’t go to Yellowstone in the summer unless you’re old or Asian.IMG_8225

Jackson Wyoming is freakin rad!  We went to a free show.. got a couple skate clips, met some great people and partied our asses off.    Another clip for Chucky, he came flying down the street and had to drop a curb right before jumping this rail.. Chuck kills.
IMG_8356

Driggs Idaho had the best skatepark of the trip, and free places to camp right there.  Everyone killed this park and the locals were stoked on us.  Worth the drive if you want a private skatepark where you can camp, and it’s only 45 minutes from Jackson WY.IMG_8366

We ended up driving through the night and some friendly toothless cowboy at a gas station told us where to camp.. It seemed like the plot to some creepy horror movie but ended up being a really cool campsite down in this canyon.. somewhere Idaho.

Amazing trip but a little too much driving in such a short amount of time.  Next time we’re skipping Yellowstone and going straight to Driggs Idaho and Jackson Wyoming.

Weekend at Stinson Beach

My lovely girlfriend, Brea has deep roots in Stinson Beach. When she was a little girl, her family lived right in the middle of the small town just a few steps from the ocean. They have a family tradition of visiting every 4th of July and participating in the Stinson / Bolinas tug-o-war. This was my first time to Stinson or Bolinas and I had a really nice time. The water was surprisingly warm and I went boogie boarding every day despite the sharky reputation surrounding the bay. The tug-o-war happens between the two towns of Bolinas and Stinson and the rope is stretched over a 100 yard inlet of water. The game is highly competitive, and despite having lots of bulky people on the Stinson side, Bolinas won both the men’s and women’s matches. Here are a few photos from the weekend.. sorry I’m about a month behind with my blog but I’m catching up and have lots more fun stuff to share soon, so keep in touch!

Justin Farren and Kerry Marshall got hitched!

Justin Farren is one of my favorite musicians and a good friend. His songs are clever and sincere, funny and exciting and always from the heart. He married an amazing woman this May in the back yard of the house they built together. It was a beautiful DIY style event complete with custom mugs for party favors, home brewed beer and an amazing potluck feast. I was there as a guest, not a photographer but I couldn’t help myself and had to shoot a few. Congrats Justin and Kerry!

Here’s a short video I shot with Justin a couple years ago:

Cosmic Sunday

By the time Sunday rolls around everyone is dirty, happy and in full party mode. We’ve all completely adjusted to our new tent homes and could probably just stay for a few more weeks if need be. The fire is spinning and the hula hoopers all have new tricks. The bands on Sunday were outstanding and the people were top notch. The cosmic family is a magical bunch! It’s hard to come back to real life after a such a great cosmic journey.
Can’t wait for next year!
